For my senior capstone project, I undertook the challenge of designing for a hypothetical apocalypse scenario. Our team selected a scenario involving extensive flooding that submerged various regions, including Seattle, WA. My focus was on Mount Rainier as the site for my individual design.
For this project, I envisioned a resilient community nestled in the mountainous terrain above the flood line. The design incorporates three primary building typologies: single-family housing units, essential transportation hubs, and a central marketplace that spans the entire length of the community. This concept aims to demonstrate innovative approaches to sustainable and disaster-resilient architecture in challenging environmental conditions.

CABLE CAR SYSTEM
Addressing transportation posed one of the pivotal challenges in my design process. Drawing inspiration from transportation methods found in favelas, I developed a solution centered around a cable car system. This system, akin to a ski lift in its continuous operation, ensures efficient movement without the need for frequent stops to board cars.
To seamlessly integrate this system within the community, I designed expansive transportation hubs. Each hub accommodates two to four cable car lines and includes amenities such as a gym, urgent care facility, small school, mailroom, and convenience store. These hubs serve as vital nodes connecting various "neighborhoods" of the community. In addition to the cable cars, elevators and escalators facilitate movement between different levels and sectors, fostering connectivity across the entire settlement, including the expansive marketplace. This holistic approach aims to enhance accessibility and convenience while addressing the unique challenges posed by the environment.
